What Happens June 1st?

Severe weather is the number one cause of power outages. Now is the time to plan and take a few simple steps to address power outages while you still have time to prepare.

Here are some ideas:

- If you have a grill, keep one propane tank full at all times.

- Put aside a couple of flashlights (with a package of back-up batteries (of the right size!)) where you will find them easily.

- Store some canned food on a shelf in the basement (or a closet if your basement can be flooded); tape a manual can opener to one of the cans.

- Store several gallons of water with the canned food.

- Freeze a couple of gallons of water to place in the refrigerator if the power goes out. You can extend the refrigerator’s cooling time, and have more water to drink if necessary.

- Buy some large packages of baby wipes. If you’re on well water and the pump is out, the wipes can keep you clean and you’ll use less of your drinking water for washing

One of the best things to have when the power goes out is an emergency generator. But the lead time to get one will be very long if you wait until there’s an active threat of a hurricane in your state.

Of course, you should make sure your insurance is up to date.  Contact Zita Santos Martinez at 732 -832-4132, for a homeowners quote.
